The world is full of division and derision https://eksperts.net/the-world-is-full-of-division-and-derision/ https://eksperts.net/the-world-is-full-of-division-and-derision/#respond Fri, 27 Sep 2024 12:06:00 +0000 https://eksperts.net/?p=1884

When we are face to face with death at a young age, we tend to look at life differently. We develop a perspective that can see beyond the surface and propaganda.

Sometimes that can come off as detached and cynical. We have to work at nurturing the softer side and balance out using our heart and mind, while staying empathic and open minded.

Our world is full of division and derision. We have to do our part to reverse this.

We also need to try to work together to reverse decades, if not centuries, of greed and the need to control others by dividing and pitting one against each other for the sake of greed, power and a money-hungry group of people.

Instead, we should help each other to coexist peacefully, regardless of background and beliefs.

“The purpose of propaganda is to make one set of people forget that other sets of people are humans.” – Aldous Huxley

Throughout history, there have been many articles, books, documentaries and films warning us of the path we humans have been on…

Some songs that provide insights on this:
“Us and Them” by Pink Floyd
“Crime of the Century” by Supertramp
“Driven to Tears” by The Police
“Right in two” by Tool

Don’t blindly follow the path without looking beyond the surface with an open mind. Never place blame on others for the road you are on. It’s your own asphalt.

The Art of Listening: How AI and Music Can Help Us Become Better Listeners https://eksperts.net/the-art-of-listening-how-ai-and-music-can-help-us-become-better-listeners/ https://eksperts.net/the-art-of-listening-how-ai-and-music-can-help-us-become-better-listeners/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2024 12:09:00 +0000 https://eksperts.net/?p=1868

Just because we can hear doesn’t mean we’re great at listening. And even if we’re good listeners, there’s always room for improvement. There’s a ton of info out there about why listening is so important, but let’s dive into a fun example.

Remember when AI models used to mess up simple tasks like counting the Rs in “strawberry”? They’ve come a long way, and so can we with our listening skills. Besides that, to get better, more accurate results, we need to provide additional details (parameters, prompt engineering). We need to ask ourselves, what other details we need to provide for the AI engine to better understand what we are looking for.

It got me thinking about this while listening to my music library with my various headphones. Each type—wired, wireless, in-ear—has its perks and quirks. Depending on the music genre, I pick specific headphones. Classical, jazz, live pop—you name it, I’ve got the perfect pair.

Listening to music this way has sharpened my listening skills. When I focus on different instruments like the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, I’m not just hearing the music; I’m dissecting it. I analyze the production, the mix, and the arrangement to understand what the artists are trying to convey. This deep dive into music helps me listen better in conversations too.

When I talk to someone, I try to break down what they’re saying, how they’re saying it, what they’re NOT saying, and the emotions behind their words. It’s like listening to a song in a different language—you need to understand the culture and background to get it.

Growing up, I learned a few languages, which helped me keep an open mind and absorb details better. Whether someone’s speaking French or Armenian, I don’t just switch on my mental translation mode. I also switch to thinking in that language, turn on my knowledge of that language/culture, and tune into their unique way of expressing themselves.

Now, about the AK47 and M16 firearm sounds—yeah, I can tell them apart. Growing up and surviving through my teenage years in a political and civil conflict in a third-world country, I had to learn these sound signatures. This is my way of trying to take something positive from the terrible years and events of my teenage years. I do NOT condone gun violence. I learned from this experience that one aspect of listening is categorizing sounds with minimal emotional biases.

The point is, we learn from our environment, experiences, and open-mindedness. When we listen, we should minimize our biases and expectations to make others feel safe and open up. It’s like listening to someone in a different language; we need to understand their words and where they’re coming from.

So, let’s keep working on our listening skills. Listen with an open mind to better understand, ask the right questions, connect, and improve our listening skills.

Speaking of being passionately curious: (cont.) https://eksperts.net/speaking-of-being-passionately-curious-cont/ https://eksperts.net/speaking-of-being-passionately-curious-cont/#respond Thu, 22 Aug 2024 15:39:23 +0000 https://eksperts.net/?p=1861 A little more detail on what this effort was:

I started with the idea of building an application using AI that will have the functionality of taking an input file(s) then have the ability to create a mapping of the transformation to an output file template. I am well aware that there are plenty of similar tools on the market. I wanted to see what I could do with or without AI.

Well, AI is great and doing things faster than us humans. AI has a vast library of knowledge of what is already created and categorized in its wealth of information scoured from the internet.

Having said that, we need to know, in detail, what we want AI to do. We do so by passing it very detailed parameters of what want AI to do for the output. Even after all of that, we have to make some adjustments and changes to what we truly want the output to do. After a few iterations, I decided to take this into my own hands and build from scratch.

By doing this, I was able to better understand the limitations of AI and the parameters I used. I also learned a lot about the full current processes to build and implement because I went through each step and overcame all the challenges and obstacles along the way.

Learning works better by going through it rather than copying and pasting. Similar to everything else I do; I dive in deep to better understand how things work so I can better understand and provide solutions combining my previous experience and knowledge.

I hope this helps clarify the approach and lessons learned.

Speaking of being passionately curious: https://eksperts.net/speaking-of-being-passionately-curious/ https://eksperts.net/speaking-of-being-passionately-curious/#respond Wed, 21 Aug 2024 18:37:36 +0000 https://eksperts.net/?p=1856 A few months back, I posted a couple of teasers that I’d been working on something in my ‘spare time’ and would share more about it this summer.

Well, it’s summer and I’ve been busy working with some fantastic people/clients/projects and have not had as much spare time. However, I have been making progress on this ‘hobby project’ whenever I can!

While tinkering with this has been both tough and enjoyable, I have not been able to add all the bells and whistles to it. As, I haven’t been able to devote additional attention to it and I will not be able to in the foreseeable future.

Having said that, I wanted to stick to my previous post(s) of providing more information on this in the summer. Here are a few screenshots of what I’ve been working on in between everything else.

Note the focus has been on the functionality aspects and not focus on UI much, so function over form. I used it on a couple of projects and works really well.

This experience has provided me with a thorough understanding of the work and expertise required at each level/stage. This will help me be a more effective as a client advocate, collaborator and team leader.

I’ve always believed that advancing up the ranks by actually doing the work helps one become better at what their work, better at understanding what clients need, better at seeing the bigger picture and provide a more wholistic long term solutions.

I have had this innate passionate curiosity to learn since I was a kid. I approach everything the same way. I would take my toys apart to figure out how they work so yeah, my older brother was not happy that his toys were all taken apart as well. 😊

I might try to pick this back up in the future to make enhancements. For now, it does what I needed to do. If you are interested in knowing more, reach out and let me know your thoughts.

Let me get this straight: SPOTIFY https://eksperts.net/let-me-get-this-straight-spotify/ https://eksperts.net/let-me-get-this-straight-spotify/#respond Wed, 05 Jun 2024 12:52:41 +0000 https://eksperts.net/?p=1841 Let me get this straight.

The CEO of Spotify, who does not know how to play any instruments or arrange a piece of music or write a song, just posted that for Q1 of 2024 Spotify posted $1 billion in profit. Then, announced that they are raising the monthly subscription fees and none of that is going to the artists. Also, introduce a minimum threshold of 1000 streams before the artist can qualify to get paid the very low (pennies) amount per stream.

one of many examples: Peter Frampton recently posted: “For 55 million streams of, ‘Baby I Love Your Way’, I got $1,700,”

I know it’s not just up to the CEO for a publicly traded company.

Still.

Talk about greed and out of touch.

I am posting this because music has been and is one of the most important aspects of my daily life. Music has helped me through some very hard times. Too many to count.

There are so many amazing new and old artists and music out there. All it takes is just a little effort with many modern tools to discover, listen and purchase. I buy directly from artists whenever it’s available or purchase CDs, Vinyl, or digital downloads to better support the artists.

I am aware that it’s not that simple and we have to be more actively involved, but it seems that there is a lot of money left on the table from the Spotify model. The system is broken. There are many other similar business models that are in the same state of “growth” that take advantage of talents. We tend to fall into the convenience of things for the short-term benefit, but we pay for it in the long run. We should do better as human beings. We can do better.
